|Title||Swirling Flowers or Rising Sun Variation|
Swirling Flowers or rising Sun Variation. From Beulah Jacobs Gibbs estate--Pocasett, Mass.
Quilt probably made by Beulah's mother Caroline Davis. Beulah was married in 1895 and this quilt dates to an earlier period. Beulah died in 1936.
The quilt shows several tears and deterioration of fabric. Mary Barton put tulle on to hold the top together and some muslin on the back.
This is a rare pattern and must be preserved. Mary Barton has seen only one other similar swirl block and that is on page 76 of Bishop's second book on quilts. A dealer owns that quilt--calls it a pinwheel and gives it an 1880 date.
Many swirl blocks have pointed edges and round centers.
Mary Barton made a copy of this quilt. She put leaved in the corners instead of squares. Her quilt is done in the same colors.
The quilting is done in a grid
